Dendermonde is home to a rich religious heritage deeply rooted in its history. The beautiful Church of Our Lady is, for example, a stunning example of Scheldt Gothic architecture. In 2024, the Michelin travel guide awarded the church two stars, meaning it is "worth a detour!" Among other treasures, you’ll find two recently restored works of art by the Flemish master Antoon Van Dyck.
But be sure to also visit the Saint Alexius Beguinage. A small paradise, hidden away from the usually bustling city. Here, peace and silence reign. In 1998, the beguinage was granted UNESCO World Heritage status. And once you step inside, you’ll immediately understand why.
