In 1914, Dendermonde was confronted with the harsh reality of the 'Great War.' The city is therefore part of the prestigious list of Belgian Martyr Cities. This is not only due to the shelling and battles between armies for its strategic location, but especially because of the systematic arson and terror carried out by the occupying forces.
