The Horse Bayard and The Giants

Discover the unique folklore of Dendermonde!

Dendermonde is renowned for its outstanding heritage. It’s no coincidence that UNESCO has taken such a close interest here. And we are extremely proud of that. Since the late 1990s, both the Belfry and the Saint Alexius Beguinage have been included on UNESCO’s prestigious list. In 2005, that same honour was bestowed upon the Ros Beiaard and the three historic Guild Giants: Mars, Indian, and Goliath.

UNESCO’s recognition speaks volumes about the historical value of Dendermonde as a city, as well as the quality and prestige of the decennial Ros Beiaard procession and the annual Giant Parade ‘Katuit’. During the festivities, Indian, Mars, and Goliath dance through the city, culminating in a spectacular finale at the Grote Markt. Katuit takes place every year at the end of August. The next Ros Beiaard procession is scheduled for 2030.
