The graceful acrobat of the Ros Beiaard

Since the 19th century, the Ros Beiaard has been accompanied by a jester. The origin of this figure dates back to the Ros Beiaard story, set in the time of Charlemagne (742 - 814). This ruler had a messenger in his service. Later, that character evolved into a man in a jester’s costume. During the procession, the jester firmly holds the ribbons attached to the Ros Beiaard’s bit and dances acrobatically while walking to the music.
