1,000 Years of History
Archaeological excavations uncovered the remains of an 11th-century cemetery. The current market square turned out to be the successor of a forecourt, a walled square connected to the former castle island in the Dender. Since the Middle Ages, the Grand Market Square has been surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, such as the City Museum Vleeshuis.
Protected
In 2004, the Grand Market Square and the surrounding buildings were designated as protected monuments and a historic cityscape. That same year, the square was redesigned. The former cobblestones and parking areas were replaced by a car-free meeting space paved with natural stone. The pattern was created by artist Harold Van de Perre. Since then, the Grand Market Square has once again become the undisputed vibrant hub for locals and visitors!
