After climbing 109 steps, you’ll enjoy a fantastic view over the city and experience Dendermonde’s history from the front row. In 1999, the Belfry was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site! On Open Monuments Day 2018, the tower was opened to the public for the first time.
Since the 16th century, the Belfry has housed the carillon in its tower. What began in 1378 as a simple clock with a weaver’s bell has grown into an impressive carillon of 49 bells. The origin of this masterpiece lay in the need to regulate the workday, but over the years, the carillon has become a symbol of the city.
All year round, every Monday at noon, the bells of the carillon ring from the Belfry tower on the Grand Market Square.
