Every year, on the first Sunday after the Easter holidays, Heritage Day takes place in Flanders and Brussels. Heritage Day focuses on the movable and intangible cultural heritage that has been passed down to us by our ancestors.
Heritage Day 2026
Dendermonde is also taking part in Heritage Day again this year. On Sunday 26 April, we will reflect on the centuries-old rivalry between Aalst, the kingdom of the “Ajuinen”, where satire is a national sport and carnival is sacred, and Dendermonde, where the heroic Ros Beiaard makes many hearts beat faster.
During Heritage Day, join a guided walk in the heart of Dendermonde, a city that for centuries has proudly claimed its place among the proud Flemish cities — with its head held high and a broad smile. During this unique city walk, you will discover why Dendermonde not only breathes history, but also humour, charm and a healthy dose of self-irony.
Along the way, we will — in keeping with centuries-old tradition — lovingly and playfully poke fun at Aalst. After all, what is a good rivalry without a touch of teasing? Expect no malice, but rather a smile, a witty remark and now and then a gentle jab that even someone from Aalst will find hard to resist.
